COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Sept. 30, 2021 — Space Foundation, a nonprofit advocate organization founded in 1983 for the global space ecosystem, today announced that it is accepting applications for the organization’s International Teacher Liaison Program “Flight 19-22” class, now through Oct. 30, 2021.

Launched in 2004, this prestigious, internationally recognized program provides select educators from around the world with new skills, strategies and capabilities to improve their classroom and student engagement as they nurture the minds of tomorrow’s world-changing adults.

Following a rigorous application and evaluation process, a new Teacher Liaison class is announced each year. Upon selection, the new class of Teacher Liaisons is called a “Flight” to denote the teachers’ mission as premier Space/STEM educators.

With more than 300 members located in 13 countries around the world, and an annual reach numbering in the tens of thousands of students, Space Foundation International Teacher Liaisons actively collaborate by sharing best practices in their support of one another on their mission to shape the next generation of scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs and explorers.

Commenting on the importance of the program, Space Foundation Vice President – Education Dr. Autumn Thomas shared, “Space Foundation’s International Teacher Liaison Program is an amazing source of innovative ideas and exciting opportunities to engage students, pushing their thinking to the highest levels.”

Teacher Liaisons tend to be master teachers who work to inspire and prepare students to pursue and excel in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Membership in the International Teacher Liaison program is open to educators in all disciplines, ranging from science and mathematics to language arts, physical education, special education and the arts. Applicants must demonstrate their commitment to integrate space-inspired education into their curriculum.

Sharing her enthusiasm for the program, member of Teacher Liaison Flight 14-17 and 2020 Alan Shepard Technology in Education awardee Kaci Heins said, “Being a part of Space Foundation’s International Teacher Liaison program has been an incredible experience as an educator. There are fantastic professional development opportunities offered year-round, both virtually and in person. The Teacher Liaison coordinators are always listening to the educators to provide meaningful content that connects space-inspired education and STEM to the classroom so the students can ‘Dare Mighty Things.’”

The program is open to public, private and homeschool teachers, in both informal and formal education. School administrators, principals, specialists, curriculum and instruction developers, as well as others who deliver educational programs to students are also welcomed and encouraged to apply. If chosen for the program, teachers receive Space Foundation training and resources to further integrate space into their classrooms. They are also invited to attend the Space Foundation’s annual Space Symposium, held each spring in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The Space Foundation International Teacher Liaison program is part of Space Foundation’s Center for Innovation and Education, a lifelong learning platform, offering workforce development and economic opportunity for students, teachers, entrepreneurs and professionals via digital programming or live at Space Foundation Discovery Center.
