Space Foundation offering “Digital Backpack” of Content, Tools, and Activities

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — August 31, 2020 — As school restarts, the Space Foundation is sharing new content, resources, and activities to help today’s students become tomorrow’s next great explorers, innovators, and entrepreneurs. With the need for schooling assistance during the pandemic, Space Foundation’s Discovery Center has redesigned and expanded its Homeschool Day program into a virtual and in-person Home Study Program.

The program offers students, teachers, and parents new lessons, as well as hands-on and virtual activities to help with K–12 required science standards. For students in the Pikes Peak region, Space Foundation’s Discovery Center is offering dedicated in-person Home Study days at its Colorado Springs Headquarters. And for students around the country, the Discovery Center provides virtual Home Study days every month.

“Every student has the potential to reach higher and explore their future possibilities,” said Kevin Orangers, Executive Director for Space Foundation Discovery Center. “They can only do that if they’re given the access, tools, and support to help them succeed. At Space Foundation Discovery Center, we want to be a supporting partner to their future potential and success.”

Beginning in September and running through May 2021, K–12 science standards will be taught through the lens of a monthly space-related theme and changing weekly topics. The space-related theme for September is STEM Education, and the weekly topics are “‘NOT YOUR TYPICAL’ First Day at School” (an open house to explore the Home Study Program’s yearlong offerings) and “Why Space?”

Home Study sessions will be held in-person at the Discovery Center on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, and virtual Home Study days will be offered on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month.

In addition to the new program, Space Foundation Discovery Center is offering a “Digital Backpack” to help get K–12 students, teachers, and parents started with the new school year. The Digital Backpack includes:

  • Monthly lessons and sessions informed with space content.
  • STEM webinar learning tools to help parents and teachers help students with digital and remote learning.
  • International Student Art Contest details for creative young people.
  • Engaging video content, including our newest series “Blastoff!”, which explores the connection between Earth and space, and shares unique pieces of the Discovery Center’s out-of-this-world collection.
  • Home Study Center Sessions (including cubicle rentals at the Discovery Center).

Students, parents, and teachers are invited to join us in-person at the Discovery Center on Wednesday, September 2, 2020, as we host an Open House and kick off the Home Study Program. All visitors to the Discovery Center must follow proper CDC guidelines for wearing masks and maintaining social distancing. Visit www.DiscoverSpace.org for more details.
