Today highly sophisticated satellite and ground-based space-technologies are focused on measuring minute movements caused by gravitational waves.  Part of these systems is what is called an isolated “proof mass”. The highly sensitive proof mass also picks up electrical charges from cosmic and galactic radiation, satellite computers, even dust particles among other sources of interference.  These charges must be eliminated to ensure accurate gravitational wave measurements.

Managing interfering electrical charges is achieved using the “photoelectron generation” effect in which ultraviolet (UV) light is directed at the gold alloy proof mass.  The impact of UV photons on the proof mass alternately attracts or repels electrons to neutralize interfering charges. 

Deep UV LEDs (UV LEDs below 320nm) provide a low cost, low power, long life UV light source. These are used in both the LIGO (Laser Interferometer Ground Observatory) and LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) projects for photoelectron generation as part of the charge management system for these gravitational wave measurement systems. Portions of these systems were developed jointly by Stanford University, NASA Ames Research Center Moffett Field, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and the European Space Agency (ESA).

Psoria-Shield has developed a spinoff of this space technology using the same unique Deep UV LEDs to treat human skin disorders here on Earth.  “Sunburn” and "suntan" caused by solar UV radiation are well known.  Less well known are the beneficial immunomodulatory affects.  Ultraviolet radiation in the UVA spectrum (320 to 400nm) and UVB spectrum (280 to 300nm) act to destroy abnormally proliferating skin cells and dampen the immune system of the skin to reverse the affects of psoriasis and eczema.  This same UV radiation also triggers specific cells deep within the skin of vitiligo patients to restore lost pigmentation.

Psoria-Shield’s Psoria-Light device delivers both ultra-violet A and B spectrum light (UVA and UVB) to human skin to treat psoriasis, eczema, vitiligo, and other UV-treatable skin conditions.  Psoria-Light is the first device of its kind to be commercialized using Deep UVB LEDs as a light source.
