Harris Corp. Sponsors Space Foundation Space in the Community Program for Brevard County Schools

Written by: Space Foundation Editorial Team

For the second time this school year, Harris Corporation has funded a Space Foundation Space in the Community (SITC) program, reinforcing the importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in preparing students for careers of the future.

Harris funded a SITC program in Colorado Springs in November and this week concluded a similar program in Brevard County, Fla., bringing an astronaut visit and hands-on STEM education activities to public middle school students.

Students attended assemblies with Space Shuttle astronaut Col. Robert C. Springer, USMC (Ret.), who flew two Space Shuttle missions, STS-29 and STS-38 and logged more than 237 hours in space. Students then learned basic engineering and flight principles by making and launching their own simple straw rockets.
